Joyner's Bar
In 1891 John T. Joyner opened a grocery store in a small wooden building at the corner of Fourth Street and a branch of the 'new' Shallowford Street. The main part of Shallowford would soon become Brookstown Avenue, and the branch where Joyner's store stood would become Burke's Alley and, eventually, simply Burke Street. Joyner's timing couldn't have been better. The West End of Winston was already exploding and there was no other grocery for many blocks to the east. Joyner's would serve as the West End's principal grocery for the next quarter of a century. In the spring of 1916, Joyner sold his business, and his old grocery became R.B. Crawford & Co., grocers, which would continue to flourish well into the 1940's. Today you can enjoy delicious food and drinks in this piece of Winston-Salem history.
