George Washington Vanderbilt came to Asheville in the late 1880?s and bought the 72 acres that ultimately became Biltmore Village. Vanderbilt conceived of the area as a “town center” to support his self-sufficient estate. Richard Morris Hunt, the architect for the Biltmore House, designed four of the original Village buildings, All Souls Church, the Railway Station, The Biltmore Company offices and the Post Office. After Hunt’s death, the job of completing the houses and shops was left to Richard Sharpe Smith who was Hunt’s on-site architect. The street plan and landscape design of the Village was executed by Frederick Law Olmsted (Designer of New York’s Central Park). Initially, the homes were rental units for many of the Estate workers. In addition to offering services to our community including free spay/neuter assistance and a pet food pantry, our Behavioral Counseling and Youth Education programs help promote a better understanding of, and respect for, companion animals. Wedge Brewing Co is located in the lower level of the Wedge Studios in the River Arts District in Asheville, North Carolina. The three story classic warehouse was built adjacent to the railroad tracks and functioned as a produce and livestock distribution center in the early part of the 19th century. After many evolutions, the Wedge, named for the shape of the building, was transformed into Artist studios by our friend, John Payne. Click here to see some of his work on YouTube. Our intention at the Wedge Brewery is to produce good beer in the classic styles. We use the best sourced ingredients to make beer we can be proud of.
